World's interesting Assassinations
Assassination is an act of killing a famous person deliberately, especially for political reasons. Many politicians have been assassinated in the history of the world. The news of these assassinations shocked the world and stunned the nation, every time a leader was killed.
Here are the few leaders who were assassinated and had a great impact on the world.
1. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Birth - 2 October 1869
Death - 30 January 1948
Assassin - Nathuram Godse
Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of Indian nationalism in British controlled India.
"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever", said Gandhi.
It's ironic how, a man who preached about non violence all his life, had to be assassinated.
Before his death, Gandhi had said "If I were to be shot in the chest and died with the words Hey Ram on my lips, only then would I be a true Mahatma."
He was shot by a Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Godse, who fired three bullets into his chest at point blank range, at the Birla house, in New Delhi, on 30 January 1948.
His last words were indeed "Hey Ram".
2. Gaius Julius Caesar
Birth - July 100 BC
Death - 15 March, 44 BC
Assassin - Brutus and 60 or more men
Gaius Julius Caesar was a Roman general, and statesmen.
In January 49 BC, Caesar led his troops across the Rubicon and plunged the Roman empire into a state of civil war.
This Roman Emperor died after a mass stabbing by 60 or more men, in the halls of the senate, after the members conspired to make people believe that he was turning into a dictator.
Before his death, his wife had a dream, where all the senators were washing their hands in Caesar's blood , after they stabbed him. She had even warned him not to go. But he still went , considering fate.
He was stabbed 35 times by different people. He had 23 stab wounds.
His last words were "Et Tu, Brute?"("Even you Brutus?"), when his close friend Marcus Brutus assassinated the leader along with the help of other senators.
3. Abraham Lincoln
Birth - 12 February 1809
Death - 15 April 1865
Assassin - John Wilkes Booth
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and is most famous for his Emancipation Proclamation and leading his country through the Civil War.
His death was attributed to a conspiracy meant to revive the Confederate cause.
He was assassinated by a well-known actor and Confederate John Wilkes Booth on April 15 , 1865 while attending the theater, when his bodyguard left to drink water during the intermission.
Booth crept up from behind and shot him in the head at point blank range. Abraham Lincoln died on the spot. The day before his death, he dreamt of his own funeral.
4. John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Birth - 29 May 1917
Death - 22 November 1964
Assassin - Lee Harvey Oswald
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States of America, serving from his election in 1961 to 1963.
He was shot dead by Lee Harvey Oswald, an employee of the book depository in Dallas, Texas on 22 November 1963.
While sitting in the back of the presidential limousine with his wife. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot three times, first time in the throat, second time in the back and the final shot striking him in the head.
The sight of Jackie Kennedy in a Chanel suit and pillar - box hat covered in blood, cradling her dying husband in her arms remains a heart-rendingly sad and iconic image.
"Where were you when Kennedy was shot?" became a global conversation topic that time.
5. Martin Luther king Jr.
Birth - 15 January 1929
Death - 4 April 1968
Assassin - James Earl Ray
Martin Luther king Jr. was a pastor, humanitarian and leader of the African - American Civil rights movement.
He was inspired by the teachings of Mohandas Gandhi and his 1959 trip to India. He gave one of the most memorable speeches of all time which started with " I have a dream..........." .
He was shot by James Earl Ray with a sniper, when Martin Luther king Jr. was standing on the balcony of the second floor of the Lorraine hotel in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was rushed to the hospital at 6:00 pm for emergency surgery, but was pronounced dead at 7:05 pm.
These were the few interesting assassinations .
